I would like to start off a discussion on what are the lessons or expereinces of the group in identifying the potential use of wireless broadband provided remotely in delivering services to enhance economic and creative opportunities to under served communities. HOW are some of the wireless community base network measuring its impact towards social enterprise and HOW are they trying to harness the enthusiasm and creativity of the community? WHAT are some of the ‘major, life-changing’ experiences that we can share among ourselves that can be found in existing/established wifi communities? HOW can we deeply develop engaging community broadband services and its impact on education, on jobs and inward investment – and as importantly, measured. Is there a strong need to establish a social enterprise to sustain itself in the long term by independent fund raising and sharing of costs amongst its members or...Is government involvement a main 'ingredient' to sustain such initiative?

Dr. Agnès Callamard is the executive director of ARTICLE XIX, an international human rights organization specializing on freedom of expression and freedom of information. Agnès Callamard has evolved a distinguished career in human rights and humanitarian work. She is a former Chef de Cabinet for the Secretary General of Amnesty International, and as the organization’s Research Policy Coordinator, she led Amnesty’s work on women’s human rights. Agnès has conducted human rights investigations, including on violence against women, in a large number of countries in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. She has founded and led HAP International (the Humanitarian Accountability Partnership) where she oversaw field trials in Afghanistan, Cambodia and Sierra Leone and created the first international self-regulatory body for humanitarian agencies committed to strengthening accountability to disaster-affected populations.

Wireless sensor networks are networks consisting of spatially distributed autonomous devices using sensors to cooperatively monitor physical or environmental conditions, such as temperature, sound, vibration, pressure, motion or pollutants, at different locations. Wireless sensor networks are now used in many civilian application areas, including environment and habitat monitoring, healthcare applications, home automation, and traffic control. Panelists will present on 1) CitySense, an urban scale sensor network test bed that is being developed by researchers at Harvard University and BBN Technologies. 2) The research carried out at the Center for Embedded Networked Sensing on participatory-sensing systems, based on automated, programmable, and adaptive collection of environmental, physiological, and social parameters at the personal and community level; 3) Project Sun SPOT, a development kit for embedded deployments built on the Java platform.

Ideas to Advance the Global Free Wireless Freifunk Community

In this panel we would like to discuss how we can join forces to advance the global freifunk community by using synergy effects among the wireless activists. After freifunk was a foremost technical experiment for years it is more and more showing its potential as an alternative communication channel for local communities. The prospectous offers opportunities to empower local communities and gives them tools into their hand which can put the digital cybersphere back to a local sphere. Local community networks which are connected with each other are in their final idea nothing less than the fulfillment of a citizen powered Internet. How can we foster this transfer of power back to the people? /*technical*/ - free frequencies reserved for the “Allgemeinwohl”, the general public. - free and open hardware - interconnect our networks via tunneling. - switch to Ipv6. - easy to use free and open source tools for non-technical people who want to take part in this r/evolution. - ability to "subscribe" to the network without being a router for mobile/low power devices, with handover from node to node for mobility. /*social* and *economical*/ - We need to put the idea of freedom first. - We need to put the idea of network==water . Who owns the network ? Who owns the network owns the information, so network must be owned by a community - We need to put the idea that as Internet has no single owner, any network should not have a single owner - We need build up a website like the mozilla foundation. - We need to form an common organization to push our ideas. - We need to be central and decentral at once (like the global freifunk newswire). - We need to see free wireless community networks as a public space open to everyone (including commercial players accepting the public space!). - We need to create an (or have to use the) ecosystem around free wireless networks. - We need multipliers showing the potential of free wireless networks (like radio makers). - We need to bring more capabilities to the existing routers and to mobile devices such as PDAs, small computers and mobile phones, allowing mobile users to contribute to the content in the network. Future Technologies of Wireless Freifunk Community Networks

Future Technologies of Wireless Freifunk Community Networks and Global Integration of best-of-breed Technologies from Projects Worldwide Wireless mesh networks are no longer only a playground for technically interested IT people. More and more they become a viable alternative as local communication networks. During a 29 day period in March/April 2007 the Berlin freifunk network for example had more than 3000 registered users and 604 observed live nodes. Currently, Freifunk mainly serves to connect the node operator and its neighbours to the Internet, however, it is evolving from a mere access network to providing localized community-based services and content, which can be provided with the ever increasing storage and processing capabilities of wireless access points. For example, in an ongoing experiment in Leipzig Germany, the “rundfreifunk”, community radio is being streamed across the freifunk network and finally broadcasted via USB FM transmitters. In this model, the technically educated node operator serves as a leveraging point to include his neighbourhood into the experiment. Another class of communication services could run directly on the node. Examples would be WLAN telephony or a distributed bulletin board to advertise parties and classifieds. P2p sharing inside mesh networks is still a problem as available programs are not adapted to wlan communication. Sharing clients that take wlan routing protocols like OLSR and B.A.T.M.A.N into account are needed. We hope to present a prototype of a wlan p2p sharing client currently being developed in the German Freifunk community and a distributed radio publishing client. Further on we would like to present the current advancement of the developers of Freifunk Kamikaze and discuss ways to work together more closely with other developers in the free wireless community. Bogdan is one of the founders and network administrators of BGWireless community network, a non-profit organization that promotes information technology and builds independent network infrastructure in the city of Belgrade, Serbia. Many technical projects from BGWireless have been used worldwide. While working for Siemens, Bogdan did considerable research on the telecommunications industry in Serbia. He has been a lecturer in many seminars in Serbia and is finishing his studies while serving in the faculty for Electrical Engineering in the Department of Computer Technology and Informatics. Recently, Bogdan has become a member of the international project "Prosense", working on research of wireless sensor networks. Other participating organizations include numerous research institutes in Europe in addition to commercial organizations like Ericsson.

We advise for all our attendees to take advantage of this convenient location by using the Metrorail system which provides both quick and affordable service to the summit site and around the District. Metrorail fare cards may be purchased at machines located at the entrances to the station.

Driving Directions

A Note on Traffic and Parking in Downtown DC: We do not recommend driving in and to downtown Washington because of shortage of free of charge parking space.Street parking is limited and parking rules are strictly enforced in downtown DC.There are a few parking garages near the AAAS building and their daily rates range from $16 to $20. Often times hotels offer discounted parking rates with your stay, and we suggest leaving your vehicle at your hotel and riding the Metro or taking a taxi to the summit site.

Southbound on the Capital Beltway: On I-495, head toward Exit 31B. Take Exit 31B for MD-97 S/Georgia Ave toward Silver Spring and merge onto Georgia Ave/MD-97. After 0.3 miles, take a slight right onto 16th St NW, drive for 1.2 miles and go straight to continue onto Eastern Ave NW. Drive for 0.7 miles, and make a right at Georgia Ave NW/US-29. Continue to follow Georgia Ave NW/US-29 for 5 miles, it eventually turns into 7th St NW. From 7th St NW, make a right at H St NW. After a couple of blocks, make a right at 12th St NW.

From DCA by Metro:

The Metro station is accessible by Terminal B and C. Pedestrian bridges are available at the concourse level at both terminals.

By the Blue Line: Take the Blue Line rail headed to Largo Town Station and exit at the Metro Station stop.

By the Yellow Line: Take the Yellow Line rail towards Fort Totten and exit at Gallery Place/Chinatown Metro Station. At Gallery Place/Chinatown Metro Station transfer to the Red Line rail headed to Shady Grove. Exit at the next stop which is the Metro Center Station.

Dulles International Airport (IAD)

From IAD by bus and Metro:

The Dulles Airport Bus Stop is located at the Ground Transportation Curb (Arrivals level, down the ramp). From Curb 2E, take the 5A Bus towards L’Enfant Plaza Metro Station. The bus comes about every 40 minutes, 7 days a week, and has a fee of US $3.10.

The community wireless and human rights movements share an interest in protecting and expanding universal access to communication technology. How can human rights organizations use their experience in advocacy, institution-building, and community organizing to support community wireless? How can local networks enhance the work of human rights groups on the ground? This breakout group will explore how we can strengthen both movements by partnering community wireless networks with local human rights organizations.

Long Distance and Low Powered Wireless

This panel will discuss several initiatives designed to improve the Media Access Layer and enhance performance by using high gain antennas to extend range. An especially relevant topic for rural areas where interference, the Achilles' heel of WiFi, is less pronounced and the lack of traditional infrastructure prevalent, this panel will focus on how initiatives have been implemented and networks established in countries of South America, Africa, and India. New results on wireless link trials at distance of hundreds of kilometers and the use of low cost instruments for the required antenna alignment will be presented. Furthermore, panelists will discuss the use of intelligent charge controllers and energy efficient devices that decrease wasted power, of particular importance where fotovoltaic energy is the only viable source.

This panel will cover business models currently used by community wireless projects around the world. What are the benefits and limitations of non-profit and corporate partnerships? What about public ownership options? What lessons can be learned from recent municipal wireless developments?
